Years ago I had a vision of a new world which mostly was about people in community growing food, living simply, with music and laughter and instead of competition, there was companionship, conviviality and community. It felt awesome.
The recent Australian budget announcements triggered something in me. I didn’t watch it. But so many people were up in arms about it that I felt that tingle that I feel with a vision being recognised. Hardship isn’t nice or easy, but perhaps it ignites the creative human spirit to thrive and prosper despite a money system determined to keep people caged.
We have so many tools to use, and now is very seriously the time to use them. Dream your life into being. Don’t put up with any of the fear mongering. You are smart and creative and “can-do”. There are so many alternatives to conventional living and I bet this community is rich in information! Homeschooling, growing your own, self-sufficiency, cruelty-free living, different barter systems, living off grid — I’ve done all of it and lived to tell the tale! I bet others have too.
One of the things Philip Carr-Gomm said in our film This Sacred Earth: The 2012 Phenomenon, was how do we make living with less more hallowed. I always really liked that idea. And it is something I have given a lot of thought to over the years.
Our society has made material wealth and stuff a goal, but the result doesn’t seem to be making people happy. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t all be prosperous — I’m saying our culture is broken. Too much depression. Too many suicides. Too much anger. Too much violence. To me that isn’t the sign of a healthy society. So I’m saying the budget may be the last straw for many people and change is being forced upon us and we have to get creative and change the way we are living — with each other, with our work, with our planet, with our animals.
So these are my thoughts about the budget. I’m quietly hoping that instead of suffering, people will get creative and the foundation for a kinder, gentler, better, more supportive world will take root.
